Graduate Certificates

Students enrolled in Bioengineering graduate programs have the option to pursue a variety of certificate programs. These programs provide a valuable opportunity to explore specialized scientific and professional interests. Students interested in pursuing a certificate should consult with their advisor and the Graduate Group Chair. Programs available include:

Advanced Scientific Computing

The Certificate in Advanced Scientific Computing is open to all master’s and Ph.D. students currently enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania. The certificate can be completed in one year and all courses are eligible to double-count towards other majors and degree requirements.

Upon successful completion, students will:

  1. Develop unique skills at the nexus of high-performance scientific computing, data science, physical science and engineering.
  2. Become equipped to solve the complex scientific and technological problems that carry societal impact through theory and computing.
  3. Earn a Certificate of Advanced Scientific Computing which will appear on the student’s official Penn transcript.

Biomedical Informatics

Biomedical Informatics (BMI) is “the interdisciplinary field that studies and pursues the effective uses of biomedical data, information, and knowledge for scientific inquiry, problem solving and decision making, motivated by efforts to improve human health.”

For students seeking training in biomedical informatics but not at a degree level, we offer a Certificate in Biomedical Informatics that consists of the same core informatics courses required of all Master’s-level students. The four-course sequence is designed to foster informatics literacy in the Penn community.

Engineering Entrepreneurship

The Certificate in Engineering Entrepreneurship (EENT) provides a foundation of knowledge and skills for pursuing high-tech entrepreneurial opportunities, and is intended to complement the student’s graduate education and training in Penn Engineering’s master’s degree programs. The Certificate is open to graduate students who are currently enrolled in any of Penn Engineering’s master’s degree programs. On a space available basis, and depending on a student’s background and training, graduate students from other schools and programs may apply for the EENT Certificate. Non-engineering students must check with their home schools and/or programs to determine their eligibility for the EENT Certificate.

Note that for Penn Engineering undergraduates, a Minor in Engineering Entrepreneurship is available. Students who sub-matriculate or who subsequently return for a master’s may not earn both the EENT Minor and the EENT Certificate.

Medical Physics for Penn Predoctoral Students

The Certificate in Medical Physics curriculum includes coursework in radiological physics, radiation protection, medical imaging, medical ethics/government regulation, anatomy and physiology, radiobiology, the physics of radiation therapy, and professional development. Six course units (CU) (18 semester hours total) and two professional development seminars (0 CU) are required for the Certificate.
